Lay Diversity Adviser Volunteer Profile
Purpose
The role of the lay adviser is to provide advice to Lothian and Borders Police on equality and diversity issues by carrying out the following functions:
- Regularly monitoring and reviewing hate crimes
- Sampling and reviewing Equality Impact Assessments
- Reviewing and advising the police on operational matters and issues arising from policies and procedures
- Providing advice in critical incidents
- Attending and contributing to the Lay Adviser Forum meetings
- Attending annual personal development review meetings
Location
Following induction training, lay advisers are allocated to work with two operational command teams in any of the four territorial divisions or headquarters of Lothian and Borders Police.
Key Tasks
- On a bi-monthly basis to meet with two operational command teams to consider and review hate crimes, trends and other diversity issues
- On a bi-monthly basis to attend and contribute to meetings of the Lay Advisers Forum
- Sample and review Equality Impact Assessments, once Equality Impact Assessment Training is satisfactorily completed
- Where applicable, be consulted or review policies and procedures and provide relevant feedback
- Where applicable, provide diversity advice in critical incidents and other areas of operation as determined by the police
- Participate in and contribute to induction and other training
- Attend seminars and conferences and report back to the Lay Advisers Forum
